Grids Best Practice

Best Management Practices (BMP) are all about employing “good housekeeping” measures whilst using the club grids.

The aim is to minimise the effects on the environment and where possible stop pollution at the source by implementing strategies, source control and treatment options.

Any person using the grids has a personal responsibility to ensure appropriate measures are taken to minimise these effects at all times.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Please consider what impact your activity will have on our neighbours, especially if you are gridding your boat early or late in the day.  Noise does travel up the valley.

The Committee recommends the use of electric water blasters.

GRID BOOKINGS:

  • Grids 5,6,7 & 8 (refer diagram below) can be booked through the online booking system. The remaining grids are available to members on a first-come basis. These may be added to the booking system in the future.

NON-PERMITTED ACTIVITIES ON THE GRIDS ARE:

  • Causing the water or mud to change colour, froth, foam, scum or have an oil residue due to contamination of any type.
  • Waterblasting for the removal of macrofouling and/or marine organisms
  • Leaving dislodged marine organisms on the seabed or in the water.
  • Leaving debris (including topside sanding dust) on the seabed or in the water.
  • Scraping off antifouling paint.
  • Wet or dry sanding antifouling paint.
  • Dripping or spilling antifouling paint onto the mud or into the water.

PERMITTED ACTIVITIES ON THE GRIDS ARE:

  • Removal of algal film by means of low pressure water blasting
  • Removal of algal film by means of sponging and hand scrubbing.
  • Changing zinc anodes.
  • Mechanical inspections and maintenance (such as changing a propeller).
  • Removal of marine organisms: Prior to water blasting macro fouling and / or marine organisms must be collected in a bucket and taken away to be disposed of. Under no circumstance should the marine organisms be placed in the clubs skip bin or thrown in the river.
  • Antifouling allowed, no dripping or spilling antifouling paint onto the mud or into the water.

Boats having macrofouling greater than 5% of the hull area must be hauled out for cleaning.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  •  The provision of maintenance grids is subject to compliance with the rules laid out in the Auckland Council’s Clean Boating Guide. Any boat that has fouling greater than LOF2 (this means no more than a slime layer and scattered barnacles on the hull with no more than 5% coverage) needs to be hauled out and should not be cleaned on the grids. Please inspect your hull for compliance before using the grids.
  • Every person using the grids has a personal responsibility to ensure that these guidelines are complied with. Failure by members to comply with these regulations risks a personal fine from Auckland Council.
  • The use of pressure water cleaning on the grids is currently allowed by Auckland Council on the condition that there is no breach of the non-permitted activities listed above.
  • Please consider what impact your activity will have on our neighbours, especially if you are gridding your boat early or late in the day.  Noise does travel up the valley.
